Pottery is an unique type of art. Pottery is made by combining clay together into objects or shapes then heating them with very high temperatures so they will become hard. Pottery could be made into jewelry maybe or pots. The people who make pottery use their hands to craft the pottery, it's like the main tool. Other tools used are pottery wheels or turntables, shaping tools, rolling tools, cutting or piercing tools and finishing tools.
The first method of pottery making was named handwork, or hand building, so it is easier to make designs on the sides. It is a faster way of making pottery compared to the wheel. Another way of making pottery is using the wheel.
The first founded pottery was in modern day Czech Republic, a figure of a nude lady dated back to 29,000 - 25,000 BCE. Many believe pottery making first started in the middle east and ancient Egypt, but there was no evidence of it.
As time and years gradually moved along, designs on the pottery have grown to become more detailed and better looking. Chinese people came up with techniques for pottery designs. Pre-Columbian Americans developed highly artistic pottery traditions. The Greeks are known for a much more sophisticated type of pottery. It was very detailed and the pottery usually told a story.
Now many people make pottery mostly everywhere. Each country makes different designs on the pottery to represent their beliefs or maybe to just show off their culture. Also, they might just do it as a hobby or just for fun.
